i`ve sent a demomaster to a costumer of his mix.

one critic point is that "overtone harmony is missing" (don`t know If this is the correct translation from german )

    I don`t know what he`s meaning ?

on the one side, i`m not a absolute pro on mastering but I know so much that I don`t want to take exiter and other psychoacustics on a master (I don’t like it, mostly)
on the otherside this costumer has a exotic perception of well balanced mixing.

My Question: Does somebody know what he could mean with "overtone harmony is missing"

    1. Is the "harmony" there on his mix?
    2. Maybe he just need a boost in the top range?

I might be missing something here .. but why don't you ask him what he means?

You probably mean Harmonic overtone. If this the case, I second Henrik on this. Still, depends the quality of the mix.

most (all) sounds consist of a fundamental frequency (the pitch, in case of a musical instrument) and..if thats actually an english word, overtones.. the overtones (and undertones) determine the timbre or 'colour' of a sound (again, no idea what the english word is for that)..
it's more complicated than that propably..this is what i remember from school..
anyway...i'm guessing he means either some harmonics originally present in the mix are missing..wich propably means some highs disappeared..
or he wants you to add overtones..(by exciting or some form of distortion, tube gear..whatever..
    i guess?!

Or it could mean you just buried the harmony vocal. Overprocessing is usually the cause.

i guess that he want more boost in the top range, too.

in the past i have boosted the top range too much , because it was sounding very "expensive" in the first time, but now and some Masters ago i don`t like the extreme top end.

my costumer have received some other demo Masters also,
i hope he will send me all the other demoMasters to compare them with my work. I'm curious about it. and i will report about it.
