Are people still buying Passive Monitors or are Active Monitors the clear choice these days? Any retailer type folks have any experience of the difference in buying patterns from last year to this year fro active speakers?
  2. Last year I purchased 1 pair of passives (westlake), one pair of actives (HHB).

Will probably buy a pair of active JBL´s for an editing suite soon, but will also listen to passive PMC´s (and probably a couple of other brands) as an alternative before closing a deal.

    Any other sugestions are welcome.

I guess it depends on what your local dealers have in stock. Here in Dallas, that's pretty much active stuff. I'm trying out a pair of JBL LSR28P's this month. Sure, I'd love to try Westlakes, or Questeds, but it's pretty hard to shell out the cash if you don't have someone you can trust (and who trusts you) for a tryout period.

At least in my room, the JBL's have solved some of my mixing issues (I was mixing 'dark'). As for Active vs. Passive, whatever works! They're all different (as are we).

I work part time at a music store. We do all right with active monitors, because we sell to people with home studios. Active monitors are a great convenience, one doesn't need to buy, and find space for an amp, and they can plug in and go. At home in my "project mastering" room I use and love my active monitors 9I'm listening to them now). At the "pro studio" where I do most of my work we have active and passive monitors, including my favorite active monitors, a Sony boombox with RCA ins.

The beauty of the active monitors is that they are either biamped or triamped. It's a lot easier to buy the whole package than purchase the three amps required and the crossovers etc and then set it all up. In active systems it is all done for you. :)
