ok: how badly do i need power conditioners/voltage regulators/etc, and a general "what the ^#$%?" about this whole area of audio stuff.

thus far i know: "dirty power make stuff sound like ass"...

what products would be the most cost effective [and portable!] way to deal?

    help.

Equi=Tech (not the mic company) make some serious power conditioning gear. It's all rack mount, but it's heavy because it uses huge toroidal transformers. I have a 15 amp one that weighs about 60 pounds. They just get bigger and heavier.
    Check it out.
