I'm new to the digital recording world, and as you know, I'm lost in a sea of information about plugins. I never realized how MANY of them there are.

My question is simple. If you were stuck with a basic DAW, and a hand full of plugins, which ones would you take with you?

Lets put it in two groups. Free and paid. I have no problem with either. There must be both good and bad plugins in both categories.

    Maybe these categories:

    Effects (one or two)

Most DAW's come with a lot of plugins, but I'm talking about trimming it down to what you could get by with, and the rest would be up to your imagination to get the sound to work.

If I had to have 1 plugin to do anything...IQ4GUI. It's effectively EQ and dynamics in one box.

    That and KarmaFX Reverb.

If you want a flexible compressor, look into 's reaplugs download. ReaComp is good.

None! all I need is Logic Studio.
(besides it doesn't support VST, VST is becoming a dead standard on the Mac, with more companies supporting Audio Units and RTAS.)

    8)

Compression. I really don't like digital EQ. I would rather take along an analog EQ, but that just isn't a VST...

    MDA's Test Tone?

    That generates signals

I'd let my Mbox go down with the ship. I'd spend the rest of my days wasting away wishing I had a Boss Br-1600.

Reverb: Variverb Pro by Magix but if I had a choice I'd lug a lexicon by the larc to shore with me.

An API or Neve Mike preamp. You don't need any processing with those.

Oh and WASABI to go with all the fish I'll be eating, raw.

I can just see Remy washed up on the beach with her Mercedes truck going "Well business couldn't be any worse here, beachfront recording"

Sounds like a place the Stones would go to record.

What about virtual instruments guys? If you had to take one one synth and one 'natural' instrument (i.e a non-synth instrument). For me, it most likely would be (right now):

    Synth: Tone2 Gladiator
Natural Instrument: Steinberg The Grand 2

    Your thoughts?

    for me it would be

    sonnox inflator
    sonnox limiter
    sonnox transmod
    waves renaissance vox
    waves renaissance eq
    logic space designer
    logix exs24
    line6 pod farm
    ni battery 3

these are the ones i use the most or alternatively could replace any other plugin with.

After discusssing this topic with a fellow mixing engimineer ... it has boiled down to 2 plugs, ear plugs..
    ok all jokes aside.
the two happen to be from waves, according to him it is the waves ssl colab channel strip AND the API waves channel strip.

but i would humbly add in my opinion
the PSP vintage warmer and also a free ware plug in
called the 2 rule filter cuz it makes drums sound extra terrestrial( its the only way i could describe it)
