    Hello again folks,
I just bought an old Yamaha PSR-4500 keyboard for use as a controller keyboard for my G3 Powerbook. All is good...I have velocity, pitch bend, mod and program change.
But, I've been noticing that other controls on the keyboard also send midi messages and I would dearly like to use these to communicate with Cubase.
For instance, there are six sliders which would be great for accessing the mixer and synths, but only one of the sliders transmits controller data (7 volume). The rest transmit sysex. There are also some buttons which would be good as transport controls, but also send sysex messages.

Now, I have never dealt with sysex before (except for sending snapshots to a sequencer), so I don't know if I'm asking too much, but is it possible to convert these sysex messages into something that Cubase or soft synths can deal with?

I'll keep trawling the net and experimenting, but all help would be appreciated...

PSR-4500? I've not heard of that one. But, if its like the 4000, I think you're out of luck reassigning those controllers.

I haven't seen a program that will decipher sysex and turn it into a controller or something else. Most will go the other way, that is, turn a controller into sysex. I the keyboard is of the 4000 vintage, you won't be able to reassign it. Can you post a picture or a link of the 4500?

    That's one...
Very few sightings on the internet except on some old euro-rocker sites in Germany!

Interesting positioning of the pitch and modulation whells/bars.
Those blue buttons in the centre struck me as nice sample triggers/transport controls and the sliders at the top-left.....etc.

My main surprise is that the 4th slider sends perfect controller 7 messages and can control the faders in cubase, but the sliders on both sides just send continuous sysex.

I've seen plenty of controller-to-sysex software, but none of the other. It's a pity, but it's a more interesting controller than my Juno.

    I'll keep trying though...

Ah, its THAT ONE! The one with the tremendous ROLL BAR.

Well, I'd say no chance to reassign internally. One reason that fourth slider may send CC 7 is that it is controlling a "panel" or the voice you're playing.

Might want to check out one of those "Knobby" things for a cheap fader surface.

Well, it was worth a shot...
Yep, very little chance of reassigning things from within, but I'll have a look at the MIDI protocol and see if a conversion is theoretically possible with software.

Then I'll see if I remember how to program...
