If you were to buy the best most versatile mic and preamp, which one would you buy? Neumann ua87 mic with Avalon Pre? Price no bar.

Actually, both of those items would be pretty far down my list.

Pre - (Bearing in mind you said versatile)

    Summit - TPA 200 B

    Mic (again, versatility in mind)

    Gefell UM900

I wouldn't buy a U87 unless you're really sure it's the mic for you. Many people dislike this mic, and you could be one of them.

I still like playing with mine though

I've never tried this one, so I can't recommend it BUT if I were in your position, I'd be very tempted to try the Soundelux E-250. Looks like a fascinating microphone. Again, I have never had the opportunity to try one, so I'm just suggesting you take a look.

Some of the Brauners are awe-inspiring, although they don't seem to suit everyone. Haven't heard the Phantom series.

Of course, it all depends of what you are after...if this is a "desert island" type of question, I would have to say:

    - API 512 (or the OSA clone) for pre
    - EV RE 15/16 for mic

If you can't get great results with this pair, regardless of what you are recording instrument/genre wise, you will never be able to get it....

    My opinion only.

my little dream path for stereo miking my acoustic guitar would be...

    mics:CharterOak SA538
    Neumann Km187

    pre: Cranesong Flamingo

    interface: Universal Audio 2192 A/D

    (total approx.: $10,500 US)

let me know if you can think of something better...
