The New AT5047 Premier Studio Microphone Purity Transformed

  1. Okay, I'm interested in getting an AKG 414, mostly on the recommendation of Kurt and others on here who suggest that they're one of the essentials for any studio.

The thing is, I look on eBay, I look on websites, I look in catalogs...and it seems that there are several different kinds of 414s.

Is this okay? Is there such thing as a BAD kind of 414? What's the story here? Any guidance would be appreciated...

IMHO, they are all really great mics for the money, at least the ones I've tried.

The 414 EB, and the older original 414 are more sought after, basically because they are percieved as more open, brighter than say, the 414 ULS; which is sort of more dull, or flat, by comparison.

The 414 TL II is definitely a brighter mic, as well.

I have yet to hear a comparison with the new XLS and XLII, but I would assume they would correspond somewhat to the ULS and the TLII, respectively.

Chris Cavell did a great write up on the different 414's toward the bottom of the page. I think you will find it very informative.
