There's bound to be electronically educated people here on this forum?
I have a specific question concerning the urei 1178 (early 80ies version)..
if i were to feed it with a fairly low level, and i crank up the level using the in- and output gain, will there be other artifacts apart from higher noise?..excess distortion for example?... I know i should just use my ears, but i'm just curious what happens electronically..

    err
    trick question ?

... not more than any other op-amp based unit.
Just how much gain are you looking for ?
and added to that , how much compression will you need once you have gained it up ?

noise is most likely your biggest enemy

Pop the compression buttons out so none of the 4 buttons are engaged and you can use the thing as a "line amplifier" without a problem. I don't remember if the 1178 has this feature, but on the 1176 you could turn off the attack [there was a switch, it clicked] which also put the unit into "line amplifier" status.

    Best of luck with it.
