Hi - a colleague has some bits to do in LA and needs a really basic 8 track 16 bit rig for playback. Can anyone recommend a good place to buy from either new or 2nd hand - don’t fancy ebay much for this one!
Any help would be much appreciated.

if you dont need TDM...and can live with LE and RTAS

doesnt the 001 have 8 outputs on it? and you would get the bonus of 24 bit if you needed :) they can be had for under $500

thought of that already - We want something solid and with AES on the back. Like I said we dont need 24 bit but the addition of a USD is a must therefore teh TDM system is the way to go - when you look at the price of an 8 track TDM 16 bit system compared to a Digi001 with the converters we need and a suitable sync box and fast enough drives then there is actually very little in it.

I'm trying to convince them to get a HD for investment purposes but that adds $10,000 onto the budget - DOH!

I found this in the "Recycler" a southern california buy/sell newspaper
    Price Negotiability
    $1,100.00 / Or Best Offer
    Ad Text
Pro Tools D24 core card & DSP farm. Provides 32 tracks TDM. Excl. cond. I upgraded to Mix system. Value higher than asking price in a Digi upgrade.

I don't know if a USD works with the above. And I don't know how many ins/outs the D24 is (2 or four I think) but it is TDM and it is at least 16bit and it's real cheap.

Just to bolster what RM said, you can search for these things on the Recycler . Old PT rigs (and sometimes HD systems) are fairly common.

Thanks guys what Recycler is too much hard work - we could look in Loot here and then ship it out. Its surprisingly hard to actaully buy a piece of gear, cant believe it! Surely there is a main dealer in LA or a chain etc who can sell me us a refurb or ex-demo system?

with that D24/farm thats for sale you would also need an interface to go along with it...888/16? in anycase I think its going to be pretty tough buying a used system without going the ebay rout...or trying to find one localy. Mostly because it seems that most people selling used hardware dumps it on ebay now days...

do you have to have sync cabability with TC?

quite right and we want this to be hassle free!

Who sells Pro Tools in LA? Is it a secret - are we not allowed to know.

To buy a british rig and ship it out will cost loads of money! :-(

'WestLake Audio' and 'West LA Music' are two Pro Tools dealers in LA. I do not think that any retail store is dealing with used systems. Between e-bay and the Trade in offers @ Digidesign there isn't (as far as I know) a market for these stores to do this. I could be wrong but that's my impression.

Here are the two best places for Pro Tools that I buy from. One is West LA Music. The number is (818) 760-4430. Ask for Joe Tapier. The other dealer is RSPE. The number is (818) 509-5876. Ask for Dave. They are both in the Valley.
Tell either one of them I sent you.
    Good Luck,

    d24 + DSP FARM V1 is a basic PT24. Some tips:

Add an adat bridge 20/24 bits if you hav a digital board like the 01V/d8b/02R/Da7.
If not an 882/20 shaall do the trick.

This PT bundle lets you record up to 24 tracks, provides you up to 24 in/outs.

Problems: If you use a similar to in-line mixer, where track 01 of Pt is chan 01 of your board, you will lose lots of dsp power.

If you intend to mix inside the outs 1-2 within the recording sesion you will be able to open a few plugs.

If you intend to buy a G4, you must look for a DSP Farm V2 QC revised.

    Hope it helped ya

do not waste your precious money with scsi and firewire hassles..

An ordinary MAxtor 60 GB ATA HD can work nicely up to 32 tracks with medium edit density.
