Hi all,

Continuing in the usual trend of being the gearslut that I am, I am in the process of getting the following gear :-

Mic: Gefell M930 (actually rated a lot better than the Neumann TLM 103).

Pre: Great River MP-2NV (2 channel pre for mics and also Hi-z for guitars/bass)

Compressor: Focusrite Red 3 (2 channel mono/stereo compressor).

Now I am getting excited at ordering/receiving these 3 units as I can image (look at my current gear below - completely stands in the shadow eh?)

However I am getting a little concerned that my MOTU 896HD will not do justice to the sound on a AD/DA level (I can switch it to +4 without pre on each channel so no worries there).

So... will the MOTU 896HD AD/DA really let this good equipment down? And if so, what would be a good buy no more than 2000 USD to compliment this equipment.

Basically the connections will be as the following :-

Mic -> Great River -> 1st channel on Red 3 then --> MOTU 896HD or AD/DA unit to MOTU 896HD?

Guitar/Bass -> (one or other connected) Great River High Z -> 2nd channel on Red 3 then --> MOTU 896HD or AD/DA unit to MOTU 896HD?

Tracking/Mixing will be done in Cubase SX3.1.1

As you can see, I am serious about boosting the quality of my tracking (I could at a push also use the Red 3 at MIX stage, we'll see about that later) so this advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
G

See how you go with the MOTU first.
Better ADDA can deffinately be the icing on the cake, but good mics and pres have a much greater impact on the sound.

But if and when you do look at converters, try Apogee, Mytek, Lavry and Benchmark.
Cheaper than these and you won't be improving much. More expensive and the difference is not worth the extra IMHO.
