last night i was sitting outside playing guitar with my friend. i have a large field, (about and acre with no trees) we were wondering how an acoustic recording would sound if it was done outside. we would be using a DPS 12 recorder with adequate micing. i wanted to know if anyone has done this before, if so, does it sound better than a room since there would be no room sound? (it will be at night so there shouldn't be any lawn mowers or anything, and the road is pretty far away, you cant hear any cars at all)
are there any mic placement suggestions? i assume i will need a hard reflective surface under the players, plywood?

also, what about recording a drum set outside?
I'm just looking for pros and cons of each
thanks

Yes, I've recorded outside before. It can sound quite good. Definately better than a bad room. There are no bad reflections to deal with. Of course a "good room" sounds ummm... I guess this is self explanatory... good. I've never recorded drums outside so I can't comment on that. Acoustic acts can perform live outside and you will have a lot of individual definition in your mix to play with
