I know a lot of people post asking how to get the sound of certain bands. I know that if Eddie Van Halen played on my guitar setup recording into a "My First Sony" it would sound like Van Halen playing into a "My First Sony". It comes down to the performer IMO.
Anyway. I want to know how the drum sound of Pantera's later albums were achieved. Mainly the kick and toms. Does anyone know? If you know about the rest of the band that would be cool too.

For the kick, duct tape a quarter to the head exactly where the baeter touches it. Then, duct tape another quarter to the beater so that thet meet flush together when the beater hits the head.
Try spreading a little vasaline on the tape so that the quarters don't stick together as the duct tape starts to wear out.
Just a really stupid trick I used to do with all the shitty metal bands.

I'm really into vinnie's sound as well. he runs 421's on the inside of his toms and 409's on top. try "scooping" the mid's out at the mix bus level if you have a high end outboard eq. as far as heads? "pinstripes" as for the kick's. yes quarters work very well. they just dont last very long(iv'e broken to many to count) the mike of choice is the ever popular AKG 414uls set on fig, 8 pattern about 6 inches from the front head. (don't forget to set the pad on the mike)remo muffles (front and batter)are the way to go for "this sound" yes it's alot of channels running twice the mics on the toms but, you get ALOT more control of the body and attack of the toms. as far as the affects the "other guys" replys are a good place to start. hope this helps, klauth.

try some ddrum triggers with some samples. I think alot of metal is recorded with sampled kicks. Even a cheap dm5 has some good thumping kick sounds.
But if you are going to mic it you should probably have the set sounding sorta like what you want it to sound like recorded. A good drum with the proper heads and having it tuned the right way really helps, and being in a room that is suited to recording drums is a +.
If you have a crappy kick drum in a crappy room and average quality recording gear, try the triggers and get a sample that sounds like his kichk and toms and there you are.
