Passing quality digital through cheap spdif

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if passing the signal from a high quality converter to my PC via a cheap interface will cause degradation. I have a cheap Edirol interface through which I'd like to pass a stereo signal from Apogee converters. I don't want to have to buy something like an RME Digiface, as it would be overkill.

Many thanks,
John Stafford

CD recorders/time codes

I was telling this guy I met who happens to own a indie label that I was going to purchase a HHB or masterlink CD recorder to produce my CD's and he said no matter what model I purchase it will not put the same kind of time codes on my CD's that a CD manufactuer equipment will. Is this true and does this really matter, if so why?

soundcard to DAT via spdif?

I'm trying to record digitally to my DAT machine a Sony 670 from my mac computer using a Delta 1010 card via the S/PDIF coaxil connection. The only way i've got it to work so far is using 48Khz sample rate, but my material is all recorded at 44.1Khz.The DAT machine is able to record at 44.1Khz(according to the manual),but i can't get it to work at that sample rate.
