I have never done anything, as far as music studios are concerned, with professional recording stuff. Sometimes I'll mess around with Sony Acid Music Studio software, but that is all. I really want to set up a (with professional equipment) Vocal Recording area. I was going to get a kit called RODE TO RECORDING SYSTEM Recording Package but I would rather handpick my own equipment.

A friend of mine wants to record audio tracks for cartoons. All he is concerned about is getting decent vocal recordings. He currently has an AT2020 mic and needs an interface. Budget is $100-150, maybe a bit more. If someone could at least point us in the right direction on what to start looking at, that would be great.

My recent signal path for vocal recording is:

RODE NT-1A --> Grace Design m101 --> MOTU 828mkII --> PC Sonar

So you can see,
without any compressor.
Actually, some clipping occurs during tracking, but not always.
I will decrease the gain in m101 to prevent clipping
(it will squeeze the dynamic range, right?)

Can you let me know what you think of the quality of this vocal recording? Any suggestions as to what might make the vocal sound better (EQ or otherwise)?

It was not recorded in a booth, and as such does not have a 100% focused sound, so I'm not looking for comments regarding that. Looking more for your thoughts on clarity and tonal balance...

I'm having some problems regarding recording vocals, they are:

-Vocals sound on-pitch/in tune with music heard through headphones (Sennheiser HD280 Pro Closed-Backs), but when played back through speakers, they are noticably (in my opinion) out of tune during some parts.

I am extremely new to recording (like very, very new) and don't know much about it. I generally understand mixing terms and such, however, so I'm hoping you guys will be able to help me.
