Ok, so I am fairly new to recording an mixing. I'm using Logic 8 and an emu 0404usb interface. One thing that I have never been satisfied with is my bass tone. What is the best way to record bass? What's the best way to mix it? How do you guys record and mix bass? I'm playin/recording hard rock and metal type music.

For recording passive, active and acoustic basses (with bridge pickup), I recommend using a Fishman Platinum pre-amp for bass. I have found that it provides the flexibility that you need if you need to adjust the input signal to how you want it to sound on the track. Not too expensive and can be used in recording and live situations with any type of bass.

You can mic a bass cab, hard to do in smaller spaces, some bass amps have a direct out. You can do a number of these and blend. Hard rock/metal probably gonna like one of the bass drivers so you get some drive and distortion.
Mixing? There are a lot of different opinions but high pass guitars above 200-300hz to make room for the bass is typical, watch for bass kick drum hz conflicts.
