How much ram do you really need these days?

Hi. I just bought a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (socket 748) barebones and I wondered what is standard for ram these days.

My old system had 768 ram (3x256) but this computer needs ddr of course and is only 2 slots. Is 512 ok or 1 gb ? Are 1gb pieces cheap enough anywhere to grab one of them and have room to upgrade?

How much RAM needed for G-5 with Logic Pro 6.

ok, i finally ordered my MOTU 24IO for my MAC G-5 Running Logic Pro 6. i've got 512megs RAM. Does anyone know how many tracks i will be able to record simultaneously without problems? i'd like to do the whole 24 Bit 96khz. and i'm probably looking at recording between 12-20 tracks at a time,, anyone been in this scenario and have any advice? am i going to need more ram to do this?

what exactly does ram do in a daw like nuendo 2.0

i wonder if anyone can tell me what ram does in nuendo 2.0? the cpu and hard drive meters are self explanitory.

but i'm wondering if i bumped up my ram from 512 of rd to 1 gig, what this would do for me as far as performance?

would i get better track counts? smoother automation/editing?

does more RAM = more plugins?

I'm runnin an old dual 450 (512 ram) on OS X.2 . with a digi 002 rack. i love it so much..best resuts..but i can only have so many plugins without it telling me to increase the buffer size. which is allready maxed.
i run on average 12-15 tracks with about 2 or 3 plugs on each..jst compressors and 4 band eq's..
i also have 2 vocal tracks with auto tune
