I'm trying to do some drum covers, so I need to remove or at least quiet the drums on the original track so that you can hear my drums. I'm using Cubase LE4. What's the best way to do this?

I don't know the specifics of Cubase, but..... If you can
A) split the stereo track (of the song you're playing along with) into two separate mono tracks (L / R) and then
B) invert the phase on just ONE of those tracks and then
C) play BOTH mono tracks panned to dead-center - you will greatly diminish anything that was mixed dead-center on the stereo tracks.
Often-times this includes the kick and some of the snare (and parts of the lead vocal and bass guitar sometimes) - this won't help at all with anything that's off-center in the stereo field like the toms or overheads normally would be.
Even if you're successful and can reduce the signal(s) panned to center and it's a style of music where the tracks are full of reverb - you'll still hear the reverb from the phantom source, since most studio reverbs return in stereo.
This technique works very well in certain styles of music, but I wouldn't hold my breath that it will give you the results you're looking for. It's worth a shot.

TBBuck, from my understanding some of the industry well-knowns just drop drums over the pre-existing drums because as hueseph, there isn't really no way to do this without tampering with the beat at hand.
But here is a video by a youtube user by the name of "Sirflex10" and he in this video explains how to possibly get some of the drums quite but as stated in the beginning of the film it will be near impossible to completely remove drums from a sample.

The best way to do it is to recreate the track without the drums. You won't be able to eliminate or even quiet the drums without effecting the entire mix. If you have a few friends who can help you out recording the other instruments, that would be the best way. Do your part and let the other musicians do theirs. I know it's like reinventing the wheel but IMHO, that is the ideal solution.
