why do these drums sound like crap Part 2

I like the snare. I do not like the hi hat. New clip is better.

A definite improvement. The Snare is much better on the new one. I like it. I think the kick would be pretty close to OK if there weren't so much reverb or whatever on it. I find it hard to believe that it is even close-miked. I think you got your overheads in a spot where the high hat is getting phasey pretty bad. Very easy to accidentally do. Only thing I can say is to move the overheads around a little until it sounds better. Hard to say without seeing and feeling the setup.

OK. Obviously, this is not that tight steely Dan sound. The mix is adequate but the bass drum sounds rather thin, try some equalization there. You have some workable room ambience. The hat is sounding rather severe but fine if that's what you like, kind of reminds me of a trash can sound. I like trash cans if they are not filled with a lot of garbage. I hope you didn't pay this percussionist a lot of money (he needs some better drums and cymbals)? Maybe next time you want to start with just the bass drum, then start bringing up your overhead, then add your snare and toms for articulation. Try taking out some mid range from your bass drum. Take out some midrange on your hat. Hope this helps?

Actually the original drums sound better, sounds more like a real kit in a real room. They aint perfect but the new drums sound lifeless. Like a drum machine. just my .02

I like the old one better...even though I said that it sounded like the snare wasn't mic'd. The phase on the HH is pretty bad and that kick sounds like a 808 booming! :) I like the snare's tone but it's missing the snap. I think if I were to mix either of these tracks, I would be able to do more with the first to get it to sound good.

I know you put the second one through some gear, compressors and the like, to try and get a better sound but you really need to start with the best sound possible. It would probably better to have us listen to everything raw.

If you are gonna go through this step by step, I suggest first trying for the best raw sound. Work on mic positioning or changing them around.

Do exactly what you are doing with each new mic positioning. Record a few bars and play them back. Then move the mics and try again. It's a lot of work but it's the best way to figure it out and when done, you'll know quite a bit.

are you or the drummer hitting each drum individually and then recording each drum and then listening back and making adjustments and then recording the drum again and the listening back. thats what i do.

i should post an example of before and after what mic placement can do.

As I said I would...

Each Sample has nothing done to them (no eq compression or verb)

Drum Sample A is after I made adjustments. Hung a bunch of blankets from the rafters of the basement. Tuned the kit a bit. Worked on placement on each drum and overheads.

Drum Sample B is the before. Please excuse the tempo difference not sure why they played it slower after I made adujustments.
