Hi everyone,

I'm just about to start a project that is going to twist my rubber arm to buy more gear!

I was hoping for some recommendations...

1) I need a nice mic for electric guitars. Has anybody compared the Royer R-122 to the 121? Is it worth the extra $500? Any other suggestions?

2) I need some a pitch correction plugin for pro tools. Antares? Melodyne? Eventide? Serato?

Thanks!

A nice microphone for electric guitar cabinets is the venerable SM57. An industry and recording engineer standard. I love ribbon microphones as well. I think most of the Royer microphones sound similar to one another. They are lovely. If you want that smooth ribbon sound for micing guitar cabinets? I have had much luck, primarily recording jazz, with the Beyer M160/130 ribbon microphones (the 160 is hyper cardioid and the 130 is figure of 8). The M500 ribbon microphones also from Beyer, is a little more affordable and also quite good for vocal use. I find it has a slightly more hyped high-end, it is a single ribbon and may actually be more rugged and although I've used those as well, not my favorite.

Is your need for pitch correction for vocals? Or guitar? For vocals, I use the Antere's which I find quite good. If it's for guitar, I generally say, " take 2, take 3, take 4", you get the idea. Just remember the directions to Carnegie hall. Practice Practice Practice and you will find your way there.

The Antares plug is fine and will do what you ask it to do without that fake 'sheen' some have.

Sm57 for guitar. Also dont be afraid to stick a less expensive LDC on there...some of the better ones for guitars are the ADK's...A51, Hamburg, ST, Vienna....The Royer stuff is incredible up and down the line. If you look at the brokers, sometimes you can find Royer modified mics of all different makes. I second the Beyer ribbons also. My old 500 went teets up a few years back and I sold it broken....sad sad sad...The 160 is a GREAT mic. Would love a couple of those myself.
