RO has given me a lot as a member, so I thought it was time to give back.
I've been able to do a fair amount of mic a/b's recently, and since most of these mics have been the subject of a lot of discussion around here, I thought it would be helpful to post some samples.
Most a/b's will include: SM58, e825, 421-MDII, 414-XLS, Bluebird, and Fathead II. All were run into my Focusrite ISA 428 w/ a HPF set @ 80Hz and slight variances in gain, unless otherwise noted.
Since these tests were meant to determine the best mic for the particular job, they were tested as such, and are not meant to be a comparison of frequency response or other specs. They are meant to demonstrate the different tones and spaces each mic provides, as well as their practical uses. I'll include details such as which mic was chosen, and why.
First up, a vocal comparison. Soon a close mic'd Fender Deluxe. Others are sure to follow.
I'm in the process of organizing these and making sure they're fair comparisons for the purposes of this forum. I should have some links up in the next few days.
