Fast track ultra, and pro tools

Submitted by anonymous on Mon, 07/21/2008 - 20:08

Hey,
Ive just bought a fast track ultra, and installed pro tools, i have windows vista, the versin of Pro Tools is the newest that works with vista, however whenever i click on the pro tools icon the bar loads about a quarter of the way then it says "Unable to detect M-Audio hardware, check it is connected and switched on" or something like that. The thing is the M audio fast track is switched on and plugged in through usb. I noticed the fast track wasnt shown in the usb drive in my computer, should it be? But i can get to it and see its icon in the icon tray at the bottom, and i have installed the latest driver from the website I'm sure.

Does anyone have any idea what i need to do, its really annoying, i really need to use it. Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks.

Here is what I would do...being that it is usb:

Next time you are going to boot up the machine, before you do it, unplug the usb M-audio device from the machine.

Start the machine up. Then launch ProTools. When the software warns that it is "Unable to detect hardware" plug the usb device in at that moment.

Wait for the usb device to fully load and see if the software is able to locate the usb device this way.

You may have to do some tweaking in the protools software to let the software know exactly what it is it is looking for...

I am not a protools user

So like I'm stupid. Maybe you're too?

I had purchased an M-Audio Transit. It has been indicated that it was ProTools capable. So I thought, OK?

Then I get this Digi design M-Box 2 with ProTools LE. So I really didn't do my homework. And here I thought, I could use my Transit in combination with my Digi designed built "M"-Box (and what really does that "M" mean in a Digidesign built device??) with ProTools? But noooooo. I wasn't "M-Powered". That's an extra $300.. WTF go figure? Great compatibility. Great marketing. GREAT BIG MISTAKE! It's OK. I still don't like ProTools.

The only Pro about it is Prostitute, the school where you go to learn ProTools..

Im sure its M powered that i have, im also sure the usb drive is connected. I tried plugging it in when the message comes up and it doesnt do it, theres no way i can do something to make it recognise it because i cant actualy get on the program.

Well boss if that is the case, you need to install the M-audio device into Windows first. Windows has to have access to it in order to let others know there is a new device for software to use.

If the usb device is not plugging into what-ever-kind-of-computer you are using and working...it's not the software, it's the usb device...or a lose nut on the keyboard...

Use a usb port that you know works and plug the device into that. Get your OS(operating system) to recognize the device first, the software does not have that ability.

I usually refer to Pro Tools M-Powered or LE as
'Poor Tools' or 'Pro Fools' given all the hardware and software limitations of that program in comparison to the myriad of better specified alternatives.

Send it back and get Sonar 7 or Cubase 4. Or Tracktion. Or freaking Reaper !!

And consider a better audio interface while you're at it, preferably one that is not USB powered (PCI, or firewire - if you have a TI firewire chipset)
