Both are of the 'new generation' that finally deliver satisfying HF boost. Prior to these, the only other plug in around that delivered in this respect was the TLA EQ1 VST plug in IMHO.

Sony can be used gently or for fine surgery, With just two EQ chances on the Pultec I doubt you could 'do everything' with it.

I also have the GML option for the Sony which is good for mastering IMHO.

I am expecting a beta copy of the compressor any day now.. Cant wait!

I don't yet have access to the Oxford compressor (being on the humble ProTools LE program), but I am certainly going to give it a whirl when it gets here. The Pultec I do find limiting as you said- honestly I mostly us the stock Digidesign eq because of the fine tuning available (using it sparingly).
I bought a Valley People 610 compressor a couple of weeks ago and boy, do I ever dig it! I don't hear many people talking about this sweetheart. I love it! Cheers, Doc.

I was intrigued by the ads for the new Waves Linear Phase EQ. Actually, I posted a question in an another room, but only Doc responded.

So I went to DUC, and did a search. There are a few interesting threads - but the consensus is that it is an amazing sounding EQ, but with two problems: the price (although I'm sure it's not more than the Sony) and the large latency factor. Because of the latter, most were recommending it primarily as a mastering tool. Also it uses a lot of DSP.

But here is the interesting tidbit: again and again people were recommending the MacDSP FilterBank as the best of the "inexpensive" EQ's, and of course, it is much more DSP efficient as well. Since I'll be laying out big bucks soon on an HD upgrade, I'm thinking I may try FilterBank out for a while, and see if it does what I need in an EQ. No one is claiming it is the same as Sony or Linear Phase, but a lot of people are praising its "bang for the buck", and without the big latency problem it can be used more easily on individual tracks.

My feelings are thus:
Pro's
Oxford: Great all rounder, fabulous whopping
filters, good sound in all freq's, classy, specific, attractive, simple
Filterbank: Very usable all rounder, many EQ types for optimizing what is already very efficient DSP usage, RTAS too
Pultec: So easy, so coool, sounds very funky at the top and the bottom, punchy, RTAS too.

Con's
Oxford: No RTAS yet, DSP greedy, bit fiddly with a mouse
Filterbank: Almost there, not quite, in the sound mega stakes, filters not as good as Sony's
Pultec: More of a specific sound, not a workhorse or swiss army knife.

What i want to know is, how Doc can afford owning every plug-in known to man/womankind? You been on the corner to see your "crack" dealer lately? Or have you managed to work out a plug-in for beefy treats barter system?

Speaking of plugs - anyone had a chance to take a gander at Serato's new turntable/scratch plug-in? You can use a mouse or an optional "turntable" to scrub back and forth over a digital sample to get allegedly very realistic "scratch" effects. Doc, you got this one yet?

Haven't tried the Serato plug-in, doubt I would get it because we don't do much scratching. BTW as regards cracks I think you get what you pay for- maybe they should be called "crashes" instead of cracks. :) Cheers, Doc.

I just don't get the Oxford plug in. So many engineers rave about it, and I just can't get it to work for the life of me. Check it out at guitar center before you buy it.

I've been using the sony for about 9 months and think it's a gas. Several very different modules so it's like getting several plugins. The price certainly is a shocker though... but compared to hardware...

We're getting ready to install our HD rig which finally arrived after being backordered for 10 weeks! Then I can go through the joy of updating all our stinkin plugins, glad I have a few days into next week before any critical work.

OK, now that the Pultec EQ has been available from UA for the UAD-1 card, has anyone had the privledge of hearing this version compared to the BF Pultec??? I *love* the UA version, it has already magically saved a couple of my mixes! I have heard rumors that the UA version beats the BF version for PT, but that could just be propaganda. Anyone done a real A/B on these two?

I'm going to reserve judgements for the 96K BF pultec, but I still stand by my loathing for the Oxford plug.
