Does software based mastering compare well to hardware based mastering with devices like the TC Electronic Finalizer or the Focusrite MixMaster or the Drawmer DC2476?
The tc finalizer is available as software as well but you need to buy a tc powercore card, the plugin is called masterx3 and its a direct port of the finalizer. I am really satisfied with the results i've getting for the last 3 years(although i'd really like to purchace their md3 plugin, but cant afford it at the moment).
Now, for affordable mastering processors like the one you mentioned (Ex tc finalizer, mixmaster) in my opinion you can get the same results as well.
I don't really know the kind of "sound" you are looking for cause the models you mentioned all deliver a different sound when it comes to dynamics and tone.
