Hi guys,
I've been wringing my hands over this question for awhile now. Do I buy the 6-space API lunchbox with two 512c's, or the Seventh Circle Audio kit with the two APIs.
I'm fine with building the SCA pre's, this isn't a problem. I'm more worried about price vs sound quality, features and resale value.
1) Price:
API setup: $1675
---full setup, over $4000
SCA setup: $817
---full setup 4api, 2 neve, 2 j99s = $2500
2) Diversity in additions:
API setup: I can add the OSA stuff at roughly $450/pre, or more API at $650/pre
SCA setup: I can add Neve, J.Hardy and more API at $300/pre
(Hmm... maybe I'm answering my own question on this already)
3) resale,
API, probably 70% return
SCA, maybe 50% return, less?
4) features
API, full featured
SCA, no Pad? is this a downer?
I currently own a hamptone tube, syteks and a mackie. I'm stepping up and want to be able to record rock drums and instruments/vocals.
Anyway, can anyone weigh in on this? Give me a push in either direction.

I'm all for DIY but doing this solely to get as bargain is often a recipe for a stuff up.
Even with DIY I always suggest people have examples of the real thing as a comparison. Otherwise it's all just talk.

Having 4, 2 and 2 would make for a good variety.
API's can be resold where the DIY stuff will be different.
If this is for a roadcase and to be bounced around I think I'd go DIY and you know you can fix things BUT if you are out to impress in your gold plated studio then you will need some name brands around.
If you are loaded with names then I think that a handfull of excellently made and mysterious DIY can be a real talking peice.
... you will just have to make your choice

Yeah,
wheneven I find myself agonizing over 2 things for a long period of time, it generally means that both are a good thing. I may just take the cheap route.

I've built 2 a12s, 2 n72s and 2 j99s... they are all incredible. I like the neve clones on some things. very beefy.
I'd go with the SCA stuff again. Building wasn't a problem.

I haven't made any N72s yet. Have made A12s and J99s though. Are you saying that you don't like them on some things, but you like them a lot on some other things?
I'm curious to see what the hoopla is about.
About the resale value issue, I saw a rack of SCA pres sell on Ebay a while back for a little over $3K I believe.
