I'm looking to upgrade my converters. Any suggestions.
I'm thinking about mostly 2 channel converters in the $1000 range.
Some that I have looked at:
-Lucid A/D 9624 (Several reports of something funky going on in the high-end that's not realistic.)
-Mytek Stereo96 ADC (Read one report on RAP of "sterile sounding".)
-RME ADI-8 (Not sure if this is pro gear.)
-Swissonic AD96 mkII (I don't know much about this one.)
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
EIK

I own the RME ADI-8PRO and quite like them. They are very good converters within my frame of reference but I have not been able to A/B compare them to the other ones you mentioned.
They are a significant step up from the Delta's and similar and also easily beat MOTU stuff from what I hear.
Still, nothing like a first hand comparison ...

From the choices you listed, I'd pick the Mytek.

Are there any other converters I should be looking at in this price range?
AudioGaff, do you think there's any truth to the Myteks being "sterile" sounding?

Define sterile sounding? How do you measure it or how are you able to tell when something is or is not sterile? If something is already sterile going in, then it should be sterile going out to be accurate. I think sterile is what you'd want in a converter as color, flavor and character should be done with other types of processing.
Sterile is what others seem to label something when they compare it to the colored object that they own or use. So no, I don't think the Mytek is sterile if that is supposed to mean something negative.

The Mytek's are about 4 times as expensive as the RME's (which aren't exactly "cheap" either).
If you got 5 grand to spend, by all means go for it and tell us if you think the Myteks are worth it. I am sure that they are very good converters and you will like them. Will the be better than the RME's? I don't know.
Then again, if you are willing to spend that kind of money you might be able to take home both the RME's (they are BTW the same units as the much more expensive Nuendo's) and the Myteks and compare them directly at home. I'd be actually very interested to read a "field report" afterwards as I haven't tested the Myteks myself.

What about the apogee rosetta A?D 96? That's in your price range

re: sterile sounding
I've seen lots of "pros" on RAP say that cheap converters sound cold and sterile.
Many people there have asked how they can warm up their mixes and the answer has usually been "get new converters".
You might try a Kurzweil Rumour. The converters are suprisingly

Lynx II... you can get it with: six in two out, four in four out

do a little reaserch on this and you'll find they are an exelent choice for aroud the $1000 range. I have one and I love it. I have only been able to compare it to cheap converters (digi 001) but the difference was pretty extreme. I read they are better than the RME stuff.
