I am about to buy a sound card and want to do some home based recording. I cannot afford anything other than the high-endrange from creative, as any other soundcard in my country (new Zealand) takes a huge leap in price, including the terratec DMX6. I have decided on the audigy2 but do not know whether to get the platinum standard or the platinum Ex. It seems the specs are the same. I have a free drive bay so the standard option is not a problem there. Is there any up side to buying the Ex version other than the sheer fact it is basically external.
Also- with these sound cards will i need to purchase a seperate pre-amp to record vocals.?
can some one please help me out before i make the wrong decision-

The right decision is to NOT buy these cards. They are meant for video games mostly.
I would not recommend getting one of these cards for any serious home recording. The converters are junk..they can't work well with ASIO due to really bad buffering capabilities and they are mostly ridiculed when using them with any audio software.
Most people see those cards as synonomous with people who use cracked versions of programs.
In fact we at RO are highly against such use of programs like that. If you are buying an audio program I'm sure you can spare a couple of hundred on a somewhat decent sound card from say
MidiMan(their M-Audio hardware) or maybe a used sound card by Echo Audio or even Aardvark...
there are much better alternatives than going with Creative which will only give you terrible results
