Right now focused on getting an audio interface and microphone to start recording. I play the trumpet and only other options would be if I decided to plug my Yamaha 155 digital piano in which is less likely or if a friend that I play in an ensemble also plays guitar if we ever chose to record something together. I like the multi-use XLR and having 2 inputs and a few options. I have also seen some different choices for software. Most of the devices I look at come with entry level software and that is ok. I have been steered towards Pro Tools software, but may more towards a PreSonus audiobox usb. Most of the devices that I am considering are between $150-200 Such as:
. in no particular order
1. M-audio Fast Track Pro (Ableton Live 5),
2. M-audio MobilePre mk II (Pro Tools LE)
3. Focusrite ~200 great amps/ hardware but Ableton light which I think is more for DJ stuff and doesn't apply to me which then might mean spending a ton of money on software
4. PreSonus audiobox USB (StudioOne)
5. Mbox/mini, etc. which get exponentially expensive for their beloved (overpriced) Pro Tools software

Two of the top choices for me right now (both $150) are either the PreSonus or the MobilePre first one because of the hardware options for inputs/outputs or the latter because it comes with Pro Tools albeit scaled down as much as I would ever need and way to get my feet wet with a industry standard type software.

So suggestions on ways to go?

From looking it seems like one is either spending a couple of hundred dollars or a couple of thousand dollars. (ok not quite) But my big key in buying anything is making sure that I don't sell myself short so if I am not afraid to spend a little extra money now and be happy for the long run

I would strongly suggest the Emu 0404 USB ($200). It has great, quiet preamps and excellent converters. Better converter specs than anything you are looking at.

I have it and even though I have moved up to RME UFX, I kinda miss the sound of my Emu.

I believe the 0404 USB is about to be replaced by the 0406 USB ($229), so you might look at that too when it's released.

Recording gear

I have looked at several places online for E-mu and they don't seem to be as available as a lot of the other manufacturers. Some of the newer / updated stuff that they have coming out looks good and reasonably priced, but I don't think they come pre-packed with software.

I ultimately reviewed (multiple times) my different options and ended up going with a PreSonus Audiobox USB for ~$150 (and I was able to talk them into a 10% discount). It has all of the inputs/outputs that I need to get me started, studio one artist software, and then I bought a Shure SM57 mic since I will be recording primarily trumpet to start with. Later I may add in piano, guitar, or other tracks and this has the inputs that I need to accomplish my tasks.

The presonus was recommended at more than one place and I have heard good things about them. Obviously they like most manufacturers make higher end products as well, but for getting started I think it is going to turn out to be a great buy. I have already recorded one song and edited it down into a MP3 (for size) the recording was great. (Now I just need to work more on my playing) :-P
