I actually have a few of their drum mics, and am quite happy with them, again, they are budget mics, but imho for the price, they really outshine anything in the price range. These are my "emergency" drum mics also.

I agree with you. At late 2002 I had to record 2 horn Band Projects. They were like 40 musicians playing at the same time. Lots of Spot mics to cover the whole place. AT-US, Shure, AKG, GT, Avlex did the job pretty fine.

I've got a pair of Superlux CH-8B's (large diaphragm condensers made by Avlex) and I love 'em for the performance/price ratio. They were given to me by a former employer in lieu of payment. I've used them on lots of things. Vox, accordion, and just started a project tonight where I'm using them as drum overheads. I've been quite pleased.

Kurt, they are very budget stuff. But sound fine.
I bought a wallet with 5 mics for drums last year. It is somewhere between SM and Beta Series.

Alecio - doesn't that kit include two small diaphragm condensers? Have you had a chance to use those, and if so, how did/do they perform?

I have the distinct advantage of living across town from Avlex and having a passing acquaintance with the sales manager. They sent me a box full of large dia. condensers a while back and I settled on two:
the Superlux CM-H8D which is a tube mic w/outboard power supply, shock mount, hard mount and foam windscreen in a suitcase. It was very good for violin and excellent for cello which were my primary applications. Outstanding for the money and very good at any price.
The second was the AVS80 which came in a close second to the CM-H8D without the warmth of the tube electronics. Even more outstanding for the price as it's cheaper than the tube mic and pretty good at any price.
Conclusion: if you're looking at low end stuff like MXL etc, then look real hard at the Avlex...they are very intrested in turning out a quality product and are quite easy to deal with.
They're a well kept secret!

which other condenses did you like and for what?they have some that look similar to Neumann´s.

I have two avs80 mics. I use them all the time as overheads. Very nice. I also find that they are good with female vocals. Good detail, very crisp. They do not handle super high spls all that well. Sometimes for vocals it's a tough call for me whether I would rather use a c-414!
Super-duper for voice overs.

Jamie - the kit I bought does not have the 2 condensers you mentioned. They are 5 mics, one for kick drum and 4 for toms and snare. They are reasonable, great for the prices, betweem SM´s and Betas´s.

I read a review of these mics in a UK-based journal that gave them a pretty favorable review, although they did not care for the small-diaphragm condensor mics that are included in the kit for use as overheads. I don't remember the exact comments now, but I just remember that the drum mics were a good buy as long as you stayed away from the overheads.

They also have a very large kick mic that is not included in most of their drum packs, it is called the PRA-218B (not the 218A), that resembles the Shure Beta 52. I have this mic (as well as an AKG D112), and find it to sound pretty good on the kick.

I also have the PRA-228A that I use on the bottom of the snare that has great snap to it.

Once again, for the price...they are pretty decent mics.
