Garageband works fine as a sound recorder. What type of audio interface does your friend have?

What does he want to do with it? Simple recording/editing or all out DAW?

You can also try to use Macvide Audio Recorder.It’s prog can records many different formats of sound.Try.

GarageBand part of the iLife suite comes free on all macs, it's a Daw with built in virtual instruments and effects. It's a good place to start.

Another vote for Garageband. It's too good to overlook.
Audacity? MEH.
Ardour? Ok. A little complicated for it's useability. Routing is a bit of a nightmare.
Wavepad? May as well use Audacity.

Garageband is a robust freeware with a lot of good content as add ons.

Wavepad is the best one but a little expensive

Seriously? What about Garageband? Garageband is way more functional that Wavepad and it's free. If I had to pay as much as for Wavepad I'd buy Reaper or Mixcraft. Reaper is by far the best of these and that's not merely opinion, it's about functionality and third party support. Look it up. But since we are talking about FREE and on a Mac, Garageband is already installed and has a lot of tools that are very useable. Sure, it is limited but no more than Wavepad. In fact, less so.
