Howdy folks.
This is my first post. Please excuse the noob.
I'm not sure what I need, or if this is even the right forum. It appears that it is not obvious because of the uniqueness of my request:
WHat I'm looking for is a permanent audio setup that will pipe outdoor sounds cleanly into the house. I live in a forested part of California. My goal is to have 24/7 nature in the house.
What I need:
Outdoor Mic, capable of withstanding rain and cold. Distance from the Mic to the amp...say about 20'.
Amp/preamp - not looking for much power since it is going to be just a constant background noise.
Thoughts?

Hi and welcome to RO. You might look at the Crown PZM-11LLWR http://www.crownaud… . They would be weather resistant and have fairly good response above 100Hz - with a monstrous between 2kHz and 10kHz.
As far as an amp - were you planning on running 4 or more speakers throughout the house? Volume controls in each room?
If yes to either, a Bogen commercial mixer/amp or similar running a high-impedance 70v system might be the way to go.
Lots of luck.

Kudos for coming to the right place but ideally you would have googled "outdoor microphone" then asked for opinions or experiences with your research results.
For example a quick google of "outdoor plate microphones" returned many useful links to products which seem like they would work well within you application constraints.
Please help us help you by not asking us to be research assistants :P :)
Good luck and let us know how you proceed!

No microphone on its own would be able to withstand the elements of rain and cold AND sound decent. You would need to to construct some case to store it in.
Someone in my hometown made a case for two audio technica bp4025s and connected it to a computer and now its streaming online.
