I recorded drum tracks for Misty with my jazz group last night. Among several other problems we are having with the song, I'm not really satisfied with the sound of the brushwork on snare. I'm using a SM57 on the top of the snare, NT5 underneath (useless for brushwork) and SM81s for overheads. The overheads pick up a cool sound. Very old school. I put a plate reverb on it (which I rarely do with overheads) and got an even softer more spacious sound. Now, while I like this, I have not been able to use what I get from the 57 for a more up-front, immediate sound that some people get for brushwork. The 57 is where I usually put it for standard stick work - a couple inches from the edge angled slightly toward the center.
I didn't think to try other mics last night. I was thinking of trying a 414 or just moving the NT5 to the top.
Any other suggestions?

With Misty we were trying to lay down Rhythm tracks without the drummer to a click. The song is at a very slow temp and we weren't tight enough. This session may go into the trash, but I need to do better at this.

The 414 will work great for this. Be sure and aim it across the top of the ssnare head slightly above the rim. You'll get more of the wires this way as well as the slap if theres any being used. Season to taste.
