so I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with a SCSI CD-R (Plextor) but was wondering if IDE's were really that bad. it'll be used for audio CD burning and data backup. your thoughts?
Yeah, same question for me, but for a different reason. I'm running an all IDE setup and would prefer not to have to SCSI up the works unless someone convinces me it's worth the expense/hassle. I'm eyeing the Plextor 12/10/32 for IDE.
I used to run all SCSI drives, but have been using all E-IDE for the past two years or so. I've got no complaints at all.
It used to bethat SCSI drives offered considerably more performance (speed) but in today's world, IDE does just fine for many people, without the added hassle of the SCSI controller and extra cost of SCSI drives. However, if you're looking for a large drive array (RAID), you're probably better off going SCSI. But if all you have is a basic C and D drive HDD setup and a CD-RW, I'd think IDE should be just fine. BTW, you really can't go wrong with Plextor burners - good stuff.
I'll second what Phil says...IDE CD burners are fine..I have used only IDE's as SCSI to me nowadays isnt absolutely neccessary for burners..unless you need to take it off of the SCSI chain and attach it to an external SCSI device for some reason..otherwise I would stick with IDE...I have a 12x burner that I love!! Never had an issue with throughput or buffering problems! Also the days of CDRoms/burners taking performance away from hard drives is gone..auto insert notification can be turned off with 98,2k or XP...
