When you bounced it to wave did you make it standard 44.1/16 or is it 24 bit or some other sample rate? Windows Media Player won't play unusual sample rates without extra codecs.

What did you use to "master" the song? That program should tell you.

Or download and install Audacity. It should open it up no matter what. Same with Reaper. They will also tell you what format the file is in.

In a nutshell, this "ok, so basically I have recorded a song and I am was ready to upload to the computer." is not only confusing but begs more information be given in order to make even the most feeble attempt at correcting what ever this issue is.

Uploading to the computer? From what?

Windows media player should not be in line to interfere with an upload. It will jump up if it sees something to play, but this [uploading data OR digital audio] will be two different things.

I recorded it on a TASCAM DP-01 digital recorder (made by TEAC). It converts the recording to a wav file but i dont know the specifications of it. The manual says "The digital out data format is S/PDIF 1" and that it is an optical digital output (TOSLINK). I am uploading it to a PC that has windows XP.

I'm not sure what the issue is. According to the manual if you export a master session it should be 16 bit 44.1 which WMP does recognize and play. Perhaps try to export the master session again.

Are you trying to come out of the Tascam via the Sp/dif outputs which look a whole lot like RCA cables but are WAY different? Did you create a CD?
How is your Tascam speaking to your computer? How are you "uploading"?

This is like the third Tascam question this week, this unit has a digital out, USB and stereo line outputs. He said he was USB to his computer, a lot of these types of decks have a protocol screen where you have to be in a certain screen in order to upload a finished file.
Tascam manuals must suc or the users can't be bothered to read, I am not sure which.
Is there a disc that you need to load on the computer to install the tascam as a device or does the unit itself do that?
When you first plug in the usb cord Windows should recognize it as a mass storage device, unless you have set preferences to recognize these devices like your ipod as a music input in which case windows is automatically bringing up media player,
Try going to "My Computer" see if you can find the device and open it to see if you can find the wav file in question. Then COPY it to your main drives destination folder.
Try the step by step manual method, if not your problem may be your preference settings in Windows. I am guessing here.
