If you have a PCMCIA or cardbus slot, get an adapter for that to firewire.

My laptop has a ExpressCard 54mm slot. Does a 35mm ExpressCard work for that?

I was looking around my house and found an ExpressCard which fits my laptop. As I have not got the Project Mix yet I could not test it. So I borrowed my friends external hard drive which runs by firewire or USB. When I tried it, my laptop found the card but not the hard drive, is it likely to do the same with the project mix?

I doubt your Express Card provides bus power so unless your external HDD has it's own power supply it won't be recognized.

I have found the add on power for PCMCIA and Express Cards to be easy to blow. (I've blown four of them following proper proceedures) Once blown, they will not work. Do you have a different computer with a built in firewire port to test it? Does the drive spin up under USB power?

My computer knows when it is connected. Because it makes a noise(the windows noise for when a device is connected.) I have not tried the HDD on a computer with a firewire port. And it does run when it is running by USB.

I now take back what I just said above, it has just decided to work. So it should work with the Project Mix.

Great. If you go and purchase your very own firewire card, despite my link to a combo card, you might consider a card with only 1394a (firewire 400).
