Hey Ro'ers, I need some advice and tips on ways to get the bass in my tracks to sit in the mix properly. I recently did a song (instrumental) and when I mixed it down it was sounding pretty good, however, when I went to play it in the Windows Media Player I noticed that my bass was a little out of whack and louder than the rest of the mix. Is there anything that I can do to ensure that my bass sits in the mix properly. I have placed the song on our website if anyone wants to check it out. Please keep in mind that this is a rough mix and it's no where near finished. This is the link that will take you directly to our music page http://www.bgrecordz.com/music.html. The name of the song is Playin. Check it out and let me know what I can do to get my bass track under control. As always thanks for the sound advice.

BT, when my bass trax are blowin' up like that here are some of the things I do:

I go back and make sure the track is not bumpin above -6 db so it's not killing the mix.

Filter the lows below 50Hz and filter the highs above 10kHz.

Boost around 420Hz (ha!! ~ 420) for a little clarity.

Then start working with compression to reduce 'actual volume' and increase 'perceived volume'.

FWIW those are just a few things that work for me.

windows media player has a plugin effect that i believe it comes with called the SRS WOW effect. it boosts the bass and does some other stereo widening tricks. it makes some tracks sound cool, but for songs that are already bass heavy, it makes them muddy. check to see if thats turned on and turn it off.

I have a fender Jazz. I just record directly into my preamp. I then mult that take. I make one track that is HPassed a lot more. This is for the highs. I distort it a little usually. The other track is my main DI bass part. I don't distort that track, just light EQ.

I then send them to a sub channel and EQ compress, and then use Rbass. I find that Rbass is very good at making the bass "sit" in the mix. After Rbass, I will use a tape warmer to keep the bass nice and round. I usually mix the bass guitar -8 to -10 db less then the kick. That just seem to be the differential each time.
