I have an Ibanez soundgear run of the mill 4 string bass. I have been listening to this CD from The Flaming Lips called Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. And for the life of me have no idea how to make my bass sound anywhere like this. I'm using Cubase for the EQ and compression and stuff and fairly new to recording the bass. I'm recording it direct and not with an amp. Any tips, suggestions, or comments? HELP!

well your post could use a bit more info...however, i'll add my 2 cents.

use a direct box. if your ona budget whilrwind makes a decent one i used for a while for like $40

also-on your bass, im quite sure the ibanez sg basses have active pickups, so check yoru 9 volt on the back panel, make sure its got some juice in it.

if you are a bass player, you also can look into a dedicated bass plug in. ampeg makes one that i use (i think its by ik mulimedia). i cant remember its name, but i use it in pro tools. its got lots of prest cab and mics and such. i use it all the time but ...oh wait-it just came to me its called ampeg svx

altough I haven't heard the tune and can't comment on the tone ...I can tell you the signal chain was probably not cheap. getting fat bass tones is an artform and it comes from the player's fingers. I would look into what the player plays thru and well as his technique. and one last thing, the bass itself will make all the difference in the world ..I would say moreso than a guitar would.
