Ya. It is an excellent, clean, detailed, musical, great all purpose mic preamp. Very popular with those that record classical music. I read a news blurp that The Rolling Stones used 40-channels of them for their last tour and HBO special. Everybody should own at least one channel.
I am going to assume you mean the GR MP-2 as the GR Neve is like the Da Dog say, apple and oranges. The few times I've use the MP-2 I liked it and thought it was very much like the John Hardy with the MP-2 mabe being harder/faster/sharper in capturing dynamic transients. The MP-2 worked great on AC guitar and overheads when I used it and the John Hardy has always worked well on everything.
Thanks. I'm looking to get a new mic pre too (it will be my first big mic pre)and I've heard so much talk about the GR but I was also considering a John Hardy. That sounds strange.
Keep in mind with the John Hardy mic pre, that he has a single unit that can't be upgraded and a 4-ch frame that you load with a single module, and then you can easily add other modules later.
The Hardy is probably the mic pre that started the mic pre ternd. You can read my interview with John in the archived=s over on prorec.com if you are interested.
If you mean how does the John Hardy compare to the Sytek? I would say that the John Hardy is a much better mic pre that is smoother and more musical with better headroom. I would much rather have one channel of the John Hardy than two channels of the Sytek with or without the Burr-Brown opamps.
