Thanks for sure !

I have been actively collecting stuff since 2000 when there was a big push toward digital recording and people were dumping their analog stuff

the CBS compressor R2Z Link is working on I got off eBay back then. It had been badly abused it is now apparent
I mothball racked it ever since without knowing anyone that could take it under wing and present a worthy studio piece

that’s where Link has saved the day

He’s one amazing engineer and super gent

And now however it’s looking like with Link’s special talents it might get some action soon ;0)

my thinking then was that much of what people were dumping would remain desirable over the years to come. UREI gear always caught my attention.

And I believe this stuff is no different than a musical instrument having discrete unique voicing and colour that may not be entirely replicated by digital mapping. No two similar model boxes ever sounding exactly the same ... like two off the rack guitars ... same model, style, colour, etc ... but often large differences in the way they play and sound

for me Analog gear falls in the same category as say a rail car that has existed for decades if not centuries ... it’s design and functionality has yet to be changed or improved because it is the ultimate master form of sound enhancement tooling

like a humbucking pickup

Minimal variations but no true change

again an ultimate master form in my estimation

and when I read that the Beatles and other great acts recorded typically with 8 tracks max using largely tube based electronics and when selling millions upon millions and still sounding unmatched for all dimensions
I thought hmmm ... better grab other people’s cast away gear while it remains unpopular

now

I can say truly that for me it was the best approach possible and it all sings well together ... an analog choir of kind really

and it’s immediately at your fingertips when mastering

a tweak here and there on the fly is the fun

once you get used to it all ... it’s like playing another musical instrument really ... sweet like a piano to the touch and powerful like the wizard of Oz’s gear in results
It’s about learning how to combine pieces of gear together in a flow path that provides the easel, canvas, colours of paint, brushes, the mood ... texture, etc

And it’s all at your immediate fingertips ;0)

Welcome Bob to the group! I'm sure your contributions will be interesting to say the least! And toy-wise, YOU WIN LOL!

There's some wonderful and iconic choices there at your fingertips and yes, they all sound different from each other. Different colors on the palette.

Anyways...Welcome. Also I noticed while perusing your collection that you have what may be the the worlds largest collection of Legend guitar amps. Me and an A30 spent a lot of time bloodying up ears here and there.

Thanks indeed Dave. It's a bit out there for most people when seeing all this gear in a single setup I can admit. The cabling alone occupies a fair amount of space. The pics are actually WIP and I'm presently re-commissioning things. The principle is signals originating from an HD 24, flow to 8 channels of racked playback routing paths that are made up of initial stage WA 73EQ preamps preceded by Lexicon PCM 41's and ART Pro MPA 2's.

Those are racked up in 6U racks. From there a choice can be made regarding EQ and compression boxes before landing at the Toft ATB 16 x 8 mixer. From the Toft stereo signal paths may be sent out the door toward the master stereo rack section that consists of further preamps, EQ's and compressors before landing at either one of 3 marantz PMD 560 stereo digital recorders and to the HD 24 recorder.

As for the Legends, I bought one brand new in 1982 or 3 or thereabouts for $850 as I recall. I loved how it allowed me to simply plug straight in without pedals. The power of having freedom on stage without having to serve a processing array somewhere where you could otherwise use the floor space to move freely stuck.

These lovelies kill for the music I was covering in those days . . . Page, EVH, Gibbons, Rhoads, Iommi, Schenker, Lucather, Howe, Ralphs, Leifson, and others of similar approach.

By the time the Y2K millennium was presented, that music was no longer nearly as prominent at live venues and I morphed toward an all-tube based collection of Fender, Traynor, Peavey, Mesa, and so forth and notwithstanding none having a 4 x 12 bottom and usually at most 2 x 12's the venues post-2000 that I worked would let's say "indulge" hard rock however at wimpy volume levels.

And even moving to all tube smaller rigs it was always a struggle to find that edge without handing out earplugs. I eventually discovered a Keeley 2 knob compressor to tame things and played usually without issues thereafter. It's a tiny little guy and not terribly in the way . . always on.

I love all guitar amps really. I just bought a 30 watt all tube Pignose and plug straight in. It's crazy how cool it sounds and has all the characteristics that the Legends have but with a better distortion form for low volume stuff. I love it.

And you Dave ?
