I've been looking to purchase a Firewire mixer/input device for use with my computer, but it's unclear to me whether or not these devices do true simultaneous multitracking in your DAW.

For example if I'm using an Alesis MultiMix 8 or a Pesonus FIREPOD with Cubase.. and I have four microphones plugged in is there an individual track for each mic in Cubase? or is it all mixed into one track in the DAW?

I remember reading a review of an Alesis USB mixer and the review said it was just one audio track in the DAW and not an individual track for each input.

Does anyone know if this is universal with all firewire inputs? Can some of them multitrack and some not?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Some firewire interfaces only do stereo (2-track simultaneous) while others do more tracks simultaneous. Firewire interfaces are capable of true simultaneous multitrack recording.

As for the Alesis MultiMix series, the USB models only do stereo mix outputs, but the firewire models do true multitracking. I own the Multimix 16 Firewire and I get 1 wav file for each input on the mixer, up to 16 tracks (8 XLR and 4 stereo line-ins) OR I can just get the stereo mix (choosen in your recording software). This model comes with Cubase LE which only allows recording 4 simultaneous inputs, so if you want more you'll have to get new software (I recommend Sonar).
