Turns out the problem wasn't the drive ... it was a stupid $20 firewire pcmcia card I was running it thru.

My LaCie d2 is rock solid and handles all the tracks I've so far been able to throw at it without a hiccup. The Rocstor is fine, too, but it's not as 'silent' as I initially thought.

My only complaint about the LaCie is that its little "grind" noises as it writes are kind of loud. Only a problem because my control is also my live room (which is also my spare bedroom).
