using a Neve vr 72 input console and have a stupid question! Can I split the signal by going insert out to one source and coming off the fader (direct out) or a bus to another source. Stupid question I know but in these modern times.

I'm not sure of your plan, but you can also send signal to your small fader
if by this i could also understand that you want to make copies
if by this i could also understand that you want to make copies of the signal, then you could assign that channel to groups.
you could then take the group outs from the patch-bay to where-ever or you could hit the group button on a channel strip to get that group number coming on that strip.
