I know...and yes you are...Unless of course you are part of the new "silence movement". If that's the case you are well on your way to becoming a master.

...Ready? Here goes.

My guess is that you didn't start your recording program.
OR
My guess is that you didn't record enable the track.
OR
My guess is that you haven't set up the drivers for the interface.
OR
My guess is that you don't have everything hooked up correctly.
OR
My guess is that don't have everything (hardware) set up properly.
OR
My guess is that you don't have everything (software) set up properly.
OR
My guess is that through your "plug/trial/error" method you fried one or perhaps several pieces of equipement.
OR
My guess is that you didn't turn on the phantom power to the mic.
OR
My guess is that you got lots of equipment and didn't read even one of the manuals so that you could know what you were doing before you hooked up the first cable.
OR
My guess is that you got it all used and as such don't have any of the manuals and didn't go to the manufacturers websites and download them so you could read them and know what you were doing before you hooked up the first cable
OR
My guess is that you didn't tell us exactly how everything is hooked up so we can't give you any clear and concise reason for the problem you are having.

This may not seem helpful upon the first read through but if you go through each step above, I assure you you will find your problem and fix it.

i got the akg mic hooked the the preamp where it says microphone. and the preamp hooked to the audio interface where it says microphone. i have the phantom ON. my audio interface works cuz i can hear sound through my monitors. my mic works because everytime i make a noise the presonus led light flashes (the -20db).

couldnt i use the sound recorder on the windows xp pro to test it?

The M-audio Pro has its own mic input (XLR-combo) and pre-amps. To test out the connection to the computer, hook the mic up to the M-audio and take the Presonus out of the loop. The problem may be with the configuration of the software mixer. The signal may not be routing to the computer. But, I don't have experience with the M-Audio software. Once you get that working, you can add back the Presonus.

Why would you connect the Presonus to the M-Audio mic input? The Presonus is already amplifying the mic signal You don't need to use a second pre-amp. Once you get the mic/M-audio combo working, I think you would just connect the Presonus output to the insert jack on the back of the M-Audio unit.
