Here is my potential future computer:

motherboard: DFI NF4 ULTRA INFINITY nForce4 Ultra Athlon 64(FX)/Sempron Skt939 DDR ATX Motherboard w/Audio, LAN, RAID/Serial ATA (or regular infinity...1.5gb/s sata instead)

cpu: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Processor Socket 939

video card: Gigabyte GV-RX16P256D-RH Radeon X1600 Pro PCI Express 256MB DDR2 Video Card w TV-Out & DVI-I

i dont think the HD (whic is sata 2) or DVD burner or ram (1gig) should matter for this problem.

I also have a MOTU 828 firewire audio interface that i will use on this future computer.

will this configuration work well? will i get problems with my MOTU firewire interface? I am also using Cubase SX/Nuendo as my main sequencer. And possibly Gigastudio 3 later on.

Not everything I say is from my own experience but I have read on this subject quite a lot. In the meantime I bought and built a dualcore/nF4 setup.

With dualcore CPUs, the nF4 is OK. For some still not as good as nF3_250. It was especially with the single core CPUs on nF4 that results were dissapointing.

If you are going to use FireWire units, and you get XP with SP2, be sure to visit Microsoft on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222/en-us.

Think you can put your money anywhere but gigapowerful video card.

Very true. A $ 50-60 graphics card will suffice. Anything from ATI X300 to nVIDIA 6200 will suffice. To avoid extra noise: have a graphics card with passive cooling. Just decide if you want a dual head or not. The money you save can go into a stronger (dual core) CPU, an extra monitor for your convenience, software or a stash of single malt.

On your setup : have at least 1 GB of RAM. I'd even recommend 2GB. It's not that expensive anymore.
