Ive recently bought a midi keyboard and Cubase SX. Im new at this whole thing. Ive been playing keyboard for a long time, especially movie themes and famous songs. I've connected the midi keyboard and installed software now I just have to learn cubase...huge program it seems...

I thought it would be fun to record movie themes and soundtracks that I play. Now the thing is I have some soundblaster Live card, know its not that good but I'm just a beginner. My question is this, can I get new sounds since the sounds that exist on the SB Live card arent sufficiant to make descent sounding movie theme music.

So can I somehow install new sounds into cubasis and use them instead of the ones i have on my SB Live?

Or is there some other program more suitable for my needs, with lots of sounds and that you can add more into it?

There are literally tons of 'Virtual Instuments' that can be bought and loaded into Cubase an controlled with MIDI. However with a soundblaster live you'll have horrific latency issues, where there is a time delay between you hitting a key on the controller and the computer generating the sound. This makes playing the keyboard live all but impossible. Your best bet would be to save for a better soundcard with very low latency. These aren't too expensive and will make your life much easier.

There is however a little workaround you can do for the time being which'll help you in learning Cubase whilst you save up for the new soundcard.

Record all of your songs by using the crappy Soundblaster on board synth. You'll have little latency problems here. Then when you've finished composing you can switch each respective MIDI channel to your soft synth or Virtual Instument. Latency affects the MIDI input to Sound generation timing so a big buffer size won't matter too much on playback.

Have fun!

Thx for your reply I appreciate it.

The more I work with cubase the more it blows my mind. So many functions and gadgets. Im thinking I picked a wrong program to begin learning this stuff with. I dont want to spend more money on some book about using cubase...

Is there some other program for recording midi songs but for beginners? Not as advanced as cubase that you can recommend?

even if the learning curve might seem to be high, or some frustation kicks in, in the beginning, stick to a decent sequencer, and learn it propperly... it will take you eventually very far... :D , i have seen to many guys learning the easy stuff first (simple sample players and the like...) and then changing a dozen times to more advanced software (because of the lack of possibilities) 'till they ended all up going logic, cubase, Digital Performer or the like, and that is far more learning, frustration and most important a waist of time than you ever will have learning a serious tool in the first place... :D
a.
and for all of those progs are plenty of information and free forums on the net... google is your friend :P

Yes i know there are tons of forums, but thats not what i need right now. I need some tutorial on how to create midi music in cubase from scratch. How to get to certain menues and functions as sound effects for example, right now the music I record is flat no reverb and too bright. Id like more bass, not a clue where to modify that.

I dont mind a steep learning curve but if i cant find some guide on how to begin then its not as interesting for me to learn.
Been searching google but end up with tutorials for Cubase SX3 and its very different from SX2 which I have.
