Hi everyone, Im looking into some preamps and I want extra inputs at the same time, Im recording through a Digi 002 Rack so I need decent preamps and extra inputs through the optical input.

Ive seen the following:
PreSonus Digimax LT
PreSonus Digimax 96
Some Foscusrite

I might not be able to go for the 96, but I do have the money for the LT, so if you had the money for this one, would you buy it? can anyone recommend other preamps for the same amount of $$.

As well, almost everyone has various preamps, Im still learning and would like to know how and when to use different preamps depending on the recording situation, for the moment Im looking for my first preamp (remember Im also looking for aditional inputs).

thanks in advance

how many extra preamps do you really need? how many extra INPUTS (line level) do you really need?

There are better preamps out there than the presonus and low end focusrites - you may wanna get some more a/d converters for inputs (ie frontier, rme, etc) and then just get fewer but better preamps (fmr rnp, sytek, hamptone, brick) You can add more pre's later...

another vote for the sytek here. this was a huge step up from my old interface's preamps (presonus firestation). fwiw, they use the same pres on the digimax line as they did on the firestation. my advice on those units is stay away. they'll do no better for you then the 002 stuff!

hope this helps some,

I would say I don't necesarily need the 8 on the presonus, lets say between 4 and 6. In this case what would you exactly recommend regarding the extra inputs needed and better preamps than those on the digi 002?

thanks for your replies

Im sorry I messed up on my last reply, it looks as if its a complete quote, but you can find my reply inside that quote, the quote is only the first line, the rest I typed myself.

About the extra inputs, by knowing I need up to six Im looking at 8 for any future adjustment.

Any comments about Focusrite Octopre LE? Should this be similar to the digimax's?? Better not to look at??

Let me know please,

thanks

All the low end Focusrite pres leave a lot to be desired ... stay away from them. Same with any PreSonus pre.

While these pres are ok for what they are, they are not as good as they could be. If all you want is more inputs of the same quality as you already have for more money than you need to spend, then either the PreSonus or Focusrites will be fine. IMO the pres in almost any table top mixer will compare favorably. Don't waste your money on these mid grade mic pres.

If you want an improvment, look to the ISA range of Focusrite. These are pretty decent pres and with the ISA 428, you can get an ADAT optical interface that will allow 4 additional line inputs as well as the four to accomodate the ISA pres .... Add a Sebatron vmp 4000e and you will have all you would most likely ever need.
