Hi There,

I've recorded some audio prompts for a voicemail system used by a friend's company. The recordings themselves sound great - rich, warm sound. However, when the .wav files go onto the voicemail system, the results tend to sound pretty bad. The voicemail box is made by Avaya, and requires it's .wav's to have 8KHz SR, 16 bit resolution, and the Microsoft ACM (GSM 6.10) compression scheme.

I know the usable telephone bandwith is 300Hz-3300Hz, and I've tried to accomodate that in the audio preparation, but I'm not getting good results. The over-the-phone sound is always distant and reverbed. Note that no reverb is being used on the tracks, and the vocal talent was fairly close (1.5') to the mic in a completely dead voice-over booth. Any suggestions? What impact is the telephone companding process going to have on my use of compression?
