Well I've heard people jizz all over the place about this eq being decent for the price compared to some of the "marketed as project studio affordable crap".
I'm interested :). What does it sound like? Neutral? Distorted? What's it good for, like when would I patch it in?

Vince got it right - the Speck ASC is a very clean, useful parametric. One of the best deals around.
Another less known (and harder to find) unit is the dbx 242 Project One eq. It was originally intended to replace the Orban 642, and some dumbass in dbx marketing decided to make it a Project One series unit. They pulled it from the line almost immediately when they found out what it was costing them to build (my guess anyway). It was one of the last units Robert Orban designed for dbx. Great eq, and it has +/- 16 dB pots, except that if you go past the -16dB point, it has an infinitly deep notch filter built in!!
Wonderful toy, and you can find them really cheap on ebay at times. dbx has no mention of them on their website. I picked up my pair for under $150 each and while they're not as useful as Vince's ASC for that nice airband 25 kHz lift, the infinite notch on all 5 bands is really nice. The low and high eqs are switchable quasi-parametrics (freq and boost/cut), or shelving selectable.

It's pretty neutral and clean. I use it all the time. Kick drum, bass, shakers, vocals, acoustic guitar and the like have all passed through it at one time or another. If I had a second one I would use it on the mix bus or for in-house mastering.
