Hey guys. Little home studio question. I'm running with Cubase SX on a PC, with a PreSonus Firepod, a couple xml 603s condensor mics for acoustic guitar, and a Shure ksm27 for vocals. I'm in the market for a two channel (or two one channel) preamp. I was originally thinking to buy two single channel PreSonus Eurekas, but a few people have been steering me towards the two channel Trident s20. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Why would you say that about Presonus when you don't own a single thing by them. You also recommend a preamp you don't own in fact it doesn't appear from you gear list you own any pre's beyond your 002r's and mackie which the presonus sounds much better than. So why would you stay clear from presonus, at least if you're going to bash it you should have a clue why, and I'm sure you wouldn't make that comment without a reason. I own a Eureka and even did comparison tests between it and the pre's in my 002r and it kicked the 002 pres' ass. Just because you've heard certain pro's on here talk bad about certain pre's doesn't mean its true. Enjoirock like I said I own a Eureka and can tell a significant improvement over my 002r pre's. I've listen to both the brick and the eureka, both have great sounds, the brick is a tad better sounding, but I really liked the fact the Eureka is a channel strip, i can pretty much get my snare sounding good right from the start and can save my plug ins for another track.

The PreSonus stuff isn't *AWFUL*. It actually, in my opinion, fills a certain niche perfectly. They are aiming for the market seeking a feature-laiden product for not much $$. They do this well and make a decent product to boot.

The original M20s (with Jensen trannies) is an amazing pre. Their tube simulation (IDSS?) isn't worth the cost of the knob, but the straight pre is quite nice.

As for the Eureka - don't own one, haven't used one, won't comment.

I'm curious to see the new ADL version - $2K for a Presonus box - this must be a hell of a product!

I'm personally not a big fan of the Trident. It sounds fine, but I think it's overpriced.

Dear John,

I owned a presonus Digimax. I sold it. It's operating noise was unbearable. I couldnt use a low output mic on a soft sound source if i wanted to. If the mic pre gain was past half way hiss was very noticable.

THE MACKIE ONYX 800r hands down has better mic pres (sonically and headroom wise) and betters converters than the Presonus Digimax. (and its cheaper)

If he wanted an 8 channel mic pre, I would highly recommend the Mackie 800r over the suck-ass presonus Digimax

Further more, I can recommend what ever I want and you are a tool.

So why couldn't you say something like that stickers? My point is if you're going to tell someone to simply stay away you should at very least give your reasoning behind that. You don't see other pro's like yourself giving BS answers like yours. They give informative answers based on their own experiance which you could have done but didn't. I mean you have to give the guy you're trying to give advice to a reason to go out and buy two Bricks other than because you said so or because they seem popular. Give him some links to reviews or something. I even said I like the sound of the brick more, I just liked some of the features the Eureka had. I'll post a song tonight I did totally with the digimax and tell me what about it sounds so bad.

Enjoirock, welcome to RO!! Right out of the gate, and you're getting a dose of attitude and opinions, eh? Not all PreSonus stuff is bad, not all good. Just like Trident! I had a "compact" board of theirs years ago and it was designed to compete with the Tascam "semi-pro" stuff...horrible! Then I got my hands on an '80" Series.....love at first mix! If you are looking for a 2-channel "strip" in the "vibe" a Trident, you might look at the ATC made by Trident's founder, Malcolm Toft.
He has a nice, very well-priced 2-channel strip:the ATC-2. A friend in Baton Rouge has one, and it works pretty well, especially for rock'n'roll, where you need a bit more of agressiveness and attitude (which is what the Tridents were known for!). It is a mic pre(decent), a compressor(ok, a bit twitchy), and a KILLER EQ on each channel. Street price:<$1K!!! Check it out...

Dear John,

I see that you have decided to continue the pissing contest. I will oblige

Sorry, I will not conform to how you think I should post on recommending or discrediting gear. The reader can take it or leave it.

You posting a song recorded with your Digicrap will prove nothing. Sound quality aside, the bottom line is I know the digimax is a noisy unit.

You don't have to name call man and you're entitled to your opinion on gear but at least give something to back up your opinions. Now I have a legitimate question for you pissing match aside. Do you record most or everything thru your mackie. I noticed you have some sound clips on there. If you really think the mackie sounds that much better then I'd like to give one a try or at very least a listen. Sorry about my attitude but many people give opinions based on little to no info, even some of the more well known guys on here do that and I feel its a major downfall of this site versus some of the others. I respect your opinion I just need to know why your opinion was the way it was and you told me.

On my site the sample first sample "The Fine Print" was recorded entirely on the mackie 800r. The second sample "harbor street trio" was done mostly on the Presonus Digimax. The third sample was just a simple vocal overdub using a M-box. The rest are live 2 track recordings from the board to a sony cd-r recorder at a place (the sad cafe) that I am currently the sound guy for. I do those 2 track recording for every band that plays there..over the 3-4 years ive been there ive done sooo many...here's a band i recorded there this past sunday...
