hey all,

ive been looking into streaming, and i came across these highly capable, well respected programs which i haven't seen get much mention around here. these programs are not dumbed-down, or limited, they're full fledged, free, open source programs. ive already made VLC the default media player in my w10 machine, and its been running flawlessly so far for a week. Feel free to add to the list of useful freeware/open source stuff, it'd be great to know what else is out there.

VlC runs on mac/pc/ios/andriod, it can stream to web, streaming services, its got a little eq section, it plays back tons, like all, formats. audio, video, pictures, i havent scratched the surface of this. it really is an amazing app.

Open Broadcasting Software. this is a free streaming software that can be used for anything from broadcasting. this holds its own against some of the most popular broadcast choices like wirecast, and vmix, (which have free limited versions) and can be used for professional level work. i havent dug too deep into this one yet, but its installed and runs fine on this w10 laptop. it might be a key component to the realtime mixing/recording thing I'm trying to make.

https://obsproject.com/

between reaper, and the adobe cs2 suite (which is abandonware now, ie free) theres a complete cross platform audio, video, broadcast, software setup, thats not only professional, but free. adobe suite includes premiere, after effects, audition 3, acrobat, photoshop, illustrator, and a couple others. the adobe suite is pretty old, but so far the entire suite has run fine on w10. the whole thing could take you from idea, to finished album artwork, to broadcast- just add a computer.

Lol... Bastards.
;)

absolutely not cheap, which is exactly why i didnt have it. its been free a couple years now. you can download it from adobe.com. its a surprisingly comprehensive package, and it felt like a nice old pair of jeans messing w audition. its been fun hearing my sessions from that era.

some people are still using the older versions of CS because they arent cloud/subscription based.

to commiserate with you D, i had bought PS/Premiere elements last year, just to be adobe compatible on projects, then remembered about the free CS. [flacepalm]

just out of curioiusty what did you use CS for? any thoughts?

The only thing to be carefull with the Premiere / VLC combinaison is that when exporting for youtube from Premiere, there is a colorshift between what we see in Premiere and VLC.
The color interpretations are different. Quicktime is also known to give eratic colors compared to Premiere.
I'm not entierely sure why but it seems the colorspace used by premiere is REC.709 and when exporting to SRGB (youtube H264 codec) there is a color shift happening.
I think other softwares adjusted their h264 codec to compensate but Premiere never did...
What also burns my brain cells is that when uploading to Youtube, there is still a color and gamma shift happening.

I've been at it for too long now and it became more evident with my new Rec.709/Full SRGB monitors which I calibrated with a Colormonky device.

So what I end up doing is exporting the same sequence and uploading to youtube about 20 times and each time adjusting a custom LUT until I got 2 similar results (except for the compression artifacts). Most of the changes done in the LUT were made to the black and white levels and removing a kind of violet color cast by changing white balance and hue..
I could share this LUT File if anyone is interested...

My wife at that time was a videographer; she had been using previous versions of Premier for editing, and after reading and watching promo vids, she expressed an interest in upgrading to the CS Suite, so I bought it for her. I messed around with it a little bit - I never considered myself to be a "video guy", nor did I have much interest in becoming one - I had enough on my plate at the time, keeping up with the rapid changes in audio production, and running my studio.
I recognized that it was a powerful set of tools ( and it should have been, too, considering the price, lol)
but I never had much interest in that end of multimedia production. I knew enough colleagues who were really good at it, so any call I would get for video work through my studio ( there wasn't a whole lot, but some), I would subcontract out to people who knew what they were doing. ;)

I've been an Adobe Creative Suite user for many, many, many years. It goes against my grain, but I switched to the subscription model last year. A friend of mine is a coder for them, so I feel a little better about supporting the team. Whether it turns out to be less expensive in the long run remains to be seen. I have access to the latest versions of everything now (and some retro versions), but I usually find myself going back a version for the sake of familiarity. I was extremely unhappy when they dropped Encore, the DVD authoring software from CS several years ago - it was a significant loss to me. And to go back even further - I also greatly preferred Adobe's own in-house webdesign program GoLive over Dreamweaver, but I feel like when they bought out Macromedia it had to look like they were adding an asset, rather than just swallowing up a competitor. GoLive was far more intuitive for people like me, who prefer true WYSIWYG designing to html coding. The last thing I want to do is make webpage design MORE tedious.

I use both VLA and OBS as needed. The bad news is, open source software by its nature doesn't provide any real documentation or manuals that might help you familiarize yourself with how to use it. The good news is, a program like OBS is so ideal for teaching anything via computer that there are tons of YouTube videos of people giving tutorials on exactly how to use it - while actually using OBS to do it.

thats really good to know. im gonna have to pick your brain about calibrating monitors. Premiere is my third choice after media composer and magix video pro. i suppose its good habit to verify the colors in each program. i know with my website, some of the colors look different on my iphone, than other computer screens.

its good to know both you and marco are using these apps, it reassures me its time well spent learning them. ive found plenty of videos so far, and have found more things i didnt know i could do, things things i cant. as far as web design software the xara designer has been treating me well so far, and i find it very beginner friendly which i need!! i hav the CS2/elements if i need them, and hope to learn at least the basics.

VLC is sweet! it has a ton of remote access features, and networking features. really there's so much these things do that i didnt even know was possible.

yeah that's surprising for a free software isn't it ?
At my job, when the employes went to strike, the supervisors couldn't go out of the production plant. We use VLC to stream hockey games and keep the moral up.
I also use it to read files on my Plex media server at home ...

lol thats hillarious. how come you use VLC, instead of just using the plex app? i have plex too, i just havent used it yet, i was planning on using it, but not exactly sure what its role is going to be.

I use VLC mostly for format conversion. There are some odd video file formats out there and I don't think I've stumped it yet.

As I'm trying to decide how to move forward and update my live multi-camera video recording capabilities, I'm torn between a nice compact little Blackmagic Design hardware based ATEM TV Studio switcher and an SD-card based record deck, or just using OBS along with 2 or 3 Blackmagic PCI-based HDMI/SDI DeckLink video input cards. I've got a Mac G5 sitting around that would be a slamdunk as a video switching and capture machine, but it would be cumbersome compared to a 1/2 rack switcher and 1/3 rack recorder. When you reach a certain age you'll pay a premium to avoid lugging things around that weigh too much. But either of these options would be a welcome relief from the monster 16 space workstation with my old video mixer / 3 display monitor / DVR / DVD recorder / 8-ch audio mixer / power conditioner.

There's something reassuring about hardware, but I'm sure I felt the same way when I bought my previous Standard Def video mixer - which is now completely obsolete. (It paid for itself in just a couple jobs, so I'm not sorry I bought it - but it had a definite shelf-life)

And speaking of shelf-life, I've upgraded my cameras to 1080p, and if I'm buying hardware now is the time to commit to either HD 1080p or 4k.

pcrecord Marco, your videos always look great on YouTube, sharp focus and very well lit.
What resolution and frame rate are you shooting your raw footage at?
What camera(s) are you using?

(If you don't mind me asking.)

ive been favoring software for its ability to be in multiple places at once, and because everything i own has to fit in my car at any given time, but my cyberspace has plenty. i love the idea of hardware, but im so new to video it wouldnt make sense in my case. for your case i guess if all things were equal, does the hardware or software approach have particular limits that makes one preferable to the other, as far as performance, or functionality?

fwiw ive been using an amd a6 from best buy that goes cheap as $225, and slapped a pny ssd in it. so far it reliably runs daws and nle's for basic sessions, so maybe a budget laptop might be a fair compromise to the software approach back breaker? those G5's are sturdy. i lugged several of the studios G's around, not fun. 'Switch' is a switching program that has an app and desktop, i have the free version, but havent tried it yet, have you or anyone else?

A laptop wouldn't give you a lot of screen space to show a multiview. The other downside of the laptop approach, as I see it, is the adaptor-hub-dongle-converter rat's nest of cables and gizmos. I'd be more concerned about the reliability at that point than the portability. It could be done I suppose, but you know for certain jobs half the battle of getting paid a decent rate is showing up and looking like you're equipped like a professional.

good points. if only drummers felt like less toms and cymbals was the professional way. seems like a rackmount computer, or a mini-itx box, over a laptop, is the way to go for most things. the cost of a pci chasiss alone would pay for a reasonable desktop. my whole modus operende is not even having to show up to 'gigs' in person, since my days of routinely moving gear ended with my back injury. is it considered less professional to not use a hardware switch like the ones you linked? i always get a little nervous when Computers are involved in a live gig, regardless of make and model.

I use VLC on my phone to access my plex and on my TV I use a Roku. I guess because I didn't know better ;)
Following your post I made a search, it seems they made a client here : https://www.plex.tv/fr/apps/computer/plex-media-player/
Haven't tested it yet...

Plex is a good free multimedia server (with paid advance features). It gives streaming acces to your movies, TV shows, photos and music.

I'm using a Canon T6S with a 40mm 2.8 affordable lens or my Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 with stabilisation. (usually set to F2.8 to F3.4 depending on the look I need. )
I capture at 24frames full HD 1080P. 24 frames gives a more cinematic look. I could use 30 frames for more crisp look but I'm used to 24...
Lights are what makes a world of difference. I got 2 x 120cm octagon softbox with high lumen led bulbs. (Bonlux LED Studio Light Bulb)
And also 3 of these : https://www.aputure.com/products/al528-1
Also, to complicate things (and get more control) I use a flat picture profil.
I bought this : https://www.eoshd.com/2016/09/now-available-eoshd-picture-profiles-brings-c-log-canon-dslrs-including-1d-x-mark-ii-5d-mark-iv/
So my videos have a very flat look but I have more control in post.
The final touch of my setup is 2 calibrated Benq reference display Rec.709 / Full SRGB. Like studio monitors, you need to see what you are doing accuratly.
As for the focus, I sometime get focus chasing. The T6S has a good face tracking fonction but it doesn't have dual pixel focus like better camera.
When I bought it, the T6S was a tinny step back from more pro cameras but it fitted my budget better.
Having Dual pixel and 4K video is my next logical step...

This summer I have a videoclip planned. We did the EP recording this winter and I'm trilled to be paid for my first videoclip. . .
Of course it's a band of young musicians with little to no budget and the musicianship is very basic.. But I'm excited anyway...
I'll let you know how it goes.. I may try to do a making video.

Here is one of the videos from my last customer job using a green screen :

What does one have to do to download from Adobe? They are free, or just previous versions free (which is fine, I guess)? Do I need a subscription? Went to the site, and said needs a serial number, which makes sense.

I just wiped and reinstalled Win10 on two computers (that came with Win 8). Both were getting buggy with the Win10 upates (desktop would NOT update properly). Need some video/photo software, and Audition would be handy, too.

Thanks.

Several years ago Adobe had a major server crash and lost all information regarding licensing of some legacy product. They responded by posting a single serial number and download links to legacy software, including Adobe Audition 3.0 This was originally intended to be "free" for previous license holders, but it has been widely distributed and adopted by many who have never paid for a license.

IMO, V3.0 was a very stable and responsive DAW. I had been a Cool Edit user for ever, so moving to Adobe when they took over CE was a no-brainer. I still have CS6 loaded, but rarely use it. I decided to jump ship when they went to subscription based model

Read the following carefully, and use what your conscience allows...

If you purchased a CS2 product and are having activation issues, you can download replacement media from this page.

Acrobat 7.0 Professional / Standard system requirements.

this is the link i used, which ronmac posted while i was looking it up!! i had to sign in, and once i did this page showed the CS, and the generic/universal serial numbers they assigned to the products. you cant use these to register the product, so the registration prompt does come up on some of the programs, but they still run fine, you just x-out the box. annoying, but worth the price. i also read on a forum somewhere that the serials are in the the README file included w the suite/program.

so far no crashes since install, running w10 pro. i had to turn off updates in the services menu ctrl+alt+del, once i disabled there as well as the regular computer settings menu, updates stopped, and performance has been consistent for over 2 months.
