Hi I'm new to home recording and let me put it plain and simple I dont have clue :(
I dont even know what a preamp is, but I do know I want to start recording music.
I would appreacate it very much if someone could give a list of equipment I need inorder to start recording music in desent quality.
from what microphones should I be using to what soundcard I need to get...
the music I make will be electronic oritented (most of the sounds will be programmed ) but I would the the option of recording guitars vocals and synths (for those who guessed I love 80's music).
I know my question and the way I presented it sound annoying but bare with me I have an idea of what I want but I dont know what I need.

What OddsAre says is very true. But on the other hand, I would recomend to try and get started working with the music as soon as possible in order to relate more to the stuff you'll be reading.
What a home studio should contain:
A good pc or mac with at least 512 mb ram (some would say 1024 is a minimum), at least 2 ghz processor, an up to date OS like windows xp etc.
You need a good soundcard of course(in terms of good for studio usage), some external soundcards have integrated preamps for example M-Audio FireWire 410 (through this you kan connect guitars, midi keyboard, microphone etc). I use the 410 and I'm very satisfied with it so far.
You also need studio monitors (speakers with inegrated amplifier) or a good headset.
It's important to have a good headset or good speakers in order to hear the music exactly as it is.
To record vocal you need a good mic, personally do I use the SmAudiopro MC03 tubemic (great mic) but there's a ton of mics out there, read through this forum and other websites to find one that suits you.
And of course you'll need a pc or mac program to manage the music with.
Like for example steinberg cubase sx3.
There's a lot of programs out there too, search and buy one that'll suit you. (I think there's a thread about apps in this forum, what everyone here uses)
This was very basic, but I think that's all you need to know at this point.
There are tons of "stuff" to use with musical production, you'll find out what you'll need when you get there.

not to avoid answering your questions, but the best thing you could ever do is go to Borders or Amazon, etc and browse through the music/production section for beginer recording books. You have to understand the basics before you can do anything else.
